Release Notes v2024.4
The agenda is here, you can purchase tickets for tours, specific workshops and merch, welcome onboard new sponsors
GCEU24a which took place in Athens last month was great!
In case you missed it, some stats about our first of 2 conferences for the year: About 100 people gathered in Athens, about 1/3 came from Athens and about 1/4 arrived from outside of Europe for 3 sunny days of Go in the middle of the (northern hemisphere) Winter.
Many things did not go smooth this time, and the talk recordings are no exception. We are still in the early stage of it, doing everything we can to move this forward.
Here is one last shout out to our awesome Athens partners: Ardan Labs 🙌

As with every year, the hotels we were in touch with cannot match/discount their own offerings on booking.com, so we are not offering any hotel partnerships.Tickets

Here are the tours descriptions:Berlin History Tour, June 17 10:00-13:00
On this three hour tour we will trace Berlin’s complex story, which started in the 12th century, back when Berlin was just a small Slavic speaking settlement located in the middle of a marsh area, and we will go all the way until the 21st century, when the city was further re-shaped by the legacy of one of this country’s most successful chancellors Angela Merkel. We will discuss the ambitious Prussian kings and their successors, the German Kaisers, we will remember the tragedy and horrors of WW2 and the Holocaust, and we will make sense of the difficult years of the Cold War, back when this city was divided by a wall, into two opposing ideologies. The tour will begin at the most iconic site of Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate.
Just a few of the sites will include:
-Humboldt University, a place associated with both Karl Marx and Albert Einstein.
-Bebelplatz -“the Bibliothek” memorial at the site of the Nazi book-burning
-Checkpoint Charlie- a Cold War checkpoint and site of the tank stand off between the Soviet Union and the USA in 1961.
-The Topography of Terror, the location of the old HQ’s of the Gestapo, SS and SD – Nazi institutions of terror.
-The former Nazi Airforce Ministry of Hermann Goering
-The site of the Hitler’s bunker and suicide in 1945
-The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
-The Reichstag, the federal of parliament of this country. Our tour will end at the East Side Gallery, the longest preserved section of the Berlin Wall, and currently the city’s largest open air exhibitions.
Alternative Berlin Tour, June 17 10:00-13:00
From a militaristic and fascist capital to a center of freedom, alternative lifestyle and arts, Berlin has made a name for itself.Though alternative lifestyle and freedom are not new characteristics of this city. When looking into the foundation of the Weimar Republic - the first established democracy in Germany, one can truly understand it’s post-modern flair.
In the 1920s and 1930s, during the years of the Weimar Republic, Berlin was the artistic and cultural center, a meeting point for for the greatest performers of the time like Marlene Dietrich. At that time Berlin also became the erotic center of Europe. It was a liberal city, a home for poets, writers and artists.
This tour offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the unique aspects of the city that made Berlin the cool place it is. Especially during the Cold-War, when West Berlin was an enclave within East Germany, the city attracted students, anarchists, hippies and artists like David Bowie. This avant-garde, non-institutional atmosphere of Berlin, though under threat today, is still visible in many parts of the city. We will dedicate time to discuss the squatting culture in Berlin, the Graffiti scene and the artistic scene while admiring iconic street art works.
This is a great tour for you if it is not your first visit to the city and you wish to visit neighborhoods such as Kreuzberg and Schöneberg that offer visitors an insight into Berlin today as the Berliners perceive it, away from the touristy areas.
The tour will end at the East Side Gallery, the longest preserved section of the Berlin Wall, and currently the city’s largest open air exhibitions.
Jewish Tour of the Old Quarter, June 17 10:00-13:00
Berlin's Jewish history dates back to the 13th century, the same years the city was founded - they are woven into one another. From outcasts of society to an integral part of it, this part of Berlin's past is like no other: Until the Rise of the 3rd Reich, prominent Jews have become a third of the city's Nobel Prize winners, owners of successful department stores, and intellectuals who left a mark on Philosophy as we know it.
The story unravels the success and the destruction of this once-flourishing community while addressing the culture of memory in East- and West- Germany and stories of brave, human-loving individuals. Come on a 3-hour exploration through the former Jewish Quarter and learn about Berlin's hunting past.Berlin During the Cold War and Life Behind the Wall, June 17 10:00-13:00
Dive into this complex story of a divided city and the life of the average Volk off the beaten path. We will have a guided visit to an exciting crossing point, now a museum, called “The Palace of Tears,” and the open Wall Memorial, seeing an original part of the “Death Strip” and addressing life under the Stasi and Eastern rule. Should time permit, there will be a visit to a viewing point. We will visit a Ghost station and finish at the East Side Gallery - the longest-lasting stretch of the original wall and home to famous murals done by Artists from all over the world.
